Mexicans Produce Arms in California

(Sacramento, California) The Feds have raided a gun shop producing illegal assault weapons.

From Reuters:
Two Mexican nationals were indicted on Thursday on charges of running an outlaw weapons-supply shop in northern California that assembled and sold unmarked, illegal firearms and accessories, including machine-guns and silencers.

A federal grand jury in Sacramento indicted brothers Luis Cortez-Garcia, 44, and Emiliano Cortez-Garcia, 37, on one count each of unlawful manufacturing and sales of firearms, conspiracy to unlawfully manufacture and sell firearms and multiple counts related to making and selling illegal assault rifles, U.S. Attorney Benjamin Wagner said in a statement.

"The conduct alleged in this case involves the systematic evasion of federal firearms laws, for profit, in a manner that created a real threat to public safety," Wagner said.

Additionally, both brothers were charged with being illegal immigrants in possession of firearms.
Frankly, this report is disturbing.

Indian Submarine Accident

INS Sindhuratna

(Mumbai, India)
Two officers were feared killed and seven sailors injured when a fire erupted on board a submarine, INS Sindhuratna, around 40 nautical miles off Mumbai in the early hours of Wednesday.

The Navy said the two officers, a lieutenant commander and a lieutenant, both from the electrical branch, were "still to be accounted for". The seven sailors were airlifted by Sea King helicopters to INS Ashwini hospital in Colaba. "The sailors fell unconscious on inhaling the heavy smoke engulfing the submarine's third compartment. They are now stable," said an officer.

An upset defence ministry sought a detailed report from the Navy since this is the second major accident in the country's ageing submarine fleet in the last six months, which has further dented India's underwater combat arm.
India has suffered serious problems with its underwater vessels. Last August, eighteen crewmen died from a series of explosions aboard INS Sindhurakshak, a Russian Kilo-class submarine like INS Sindhuratna.

Duck Commander Sponsors College Bowl Game

Sponsorship of the Independence Bowl has changed.
The news trickled in late last week: So long AdvoCare V100 Independence Bowl, hello Duck Commander Independence Bowl.

Those Duck Dynasty guys (one of whom, Phil Robertson, has roots in college football) went and sponsored a bowl game, and the name (and six-year deal) became official on Wednesday afternoon.
The Robertson crew continues to realize enviable success.

Texas Teacher Gets Deal and Walks

(Spearman, Texas) A 42-year-old teacher formerly at Spearman High School, Melissa Sutterfield, has pleaded guilty to improper relationship with a student in accordance with a plea agreement.

Last September, Sutterfield was indicted on felony counts of improper relationship with a student and online solicitation of a minor and a misdemeanor count of display of harmful material to a minor.

This week, Sutterfield admitted to sending a sexually explicit photograph to a student, 17-years-old at the time.

In accordance with the plea deal, Sutterfield has been sentenced to probation for five years. She was also ordered to pay a $2,000 fine.

Also, Sutterfield is now restricted from having any contact with juveniles under the age of 18.

The joke got man banned for life from Hilton Hotel

WHEN Jason Payne returned home after his one-night stay at the Hilton in Basingstoke, UK, he was surprised to receive an email from the hotel informing him that he had been banned for life. It was all because of a rather inappropriate comment he’d made on the hotel’s online booking form three days prior to his February 8 stay at the hotel.

Mr Payne, 35, wrote under the additional comments and requests section on the form: “There’s a large snake in my trousers. Hope that’s OK.”

He claims he never expected the staff to actually read his joke, and was quite surprised when the receptionist at the hotel started laughing when he checked in. He claims the staff members didn’t seem bothered by it at all.

But in her email to Mr Payne after his stay, the hotel’s front office manager informed him that “we are not willing to accept that our team members are ever put into an uncomfortable situation, due to the abusive language a guest uses talking to them, writing to them or even on the booking form they fill in online”.

Florida Woman Accused of Lewd Behavior, Perjury & False Reporting

(Delray Beach, Florida) A 20-year-old local woman, Schnydine Augustine, reported to police that she was pushed to the ground by a group of males who stole her iPhone and $50 in cash.
But according to police, that’s not what happened.

Instead of getting robbed, police say that Augustine had sex with four minors — ages 14 to 16 — behind a store, with the activity recorded by the minors on a cell phone.

Augustine, 20, faces three counts of lewd and lascivious behavior with a victim between 12 and 16 years old and one count of perjury and making a false police report.
Augustine was arrested and subsequently released after posting a $20,000 bond.

Teacher Shows Love for Schoolboy

Teacher Bernadette Smith and student Gary Ralston

(Scotland)
A woman teacher who spent the night in a pupil’s bed wearing only her jeans and bra has narrowly avoided a prison sentence.

Bernadette Smith was said to be infatuated with Gary Ralston, who was 16 at the time.

That obsession cost the married 35-year-old her job and reputation, a court heard.[…]

She was placed under supervision for two years and will remain on the sex offenders’ register for the same period.

Her solicitor, Andrew Gibb, said she was suspended by the General Teaching Council for Scotland and would be struck off at a hearing in a few weeks’ time.
So they spend the night together in the boy's bed and there was no rubby-rubby? Hard to believe I'd say.

Anxious NY Cows Lead to Arrest

Reid Fontaine and Michael Jones

(Farmington, New York)
A school system employee resigned Sunday following his arrest in New York state on charges of sexual misconduct.

New York state police said Reid A. Fontaine, 31, an information technology network specialist for the Farmington schools, attempted to have sex with a cow on a farm in Herkimer, N.Y., while another man took video of the encounter. Police did not have an address for Fontaine, who was arrested Friday, along with Michael H. Jones, 35, of Ilion, N.Y. Both men face charges of sexual misconduct, a misdemeanor.[…]

Police said the incident was discovered by a farmer who set up a video camera in his barn in an effort to determine why his cows were acting anxious and not producing milk as usual, police said. The farmer called police after seeing the video of the alleged sexual assault of the cow.
It is extremely stupid to videotape oneself while committing a crime. And, I'll never understand the sexual allure of farm animals. I suggest that only the very, very lonely would know.

Leftists become incandescent when reminded of the socialist roots of the Nazis

People who have read much of my writings will be familiar with most of the points made by Daniel Hannan below.  We differ in one important respect, however:  Hannan says that most Leftists mean well and that their motives are different from the motives of the totalitarians.  I don't think that.  I see the same authoritarian mentality in all Leftists.  They all want to rule us

You can't accuse the NSDAP of downplaying the "Socialist" bit. On 16 June 1941, as Hitler readied his forces for Operation Barbarossa, Josef Goebbels looked forward to the new order that the Nazis would impose on a conquered Russia. There would be no come-back, he wrote, for capitalists nor priests nor Tsars.

Rather, in the place of debased, Jewish Bolshevism, the Wehrmacht would deliver “der echte Sozialismus”: real socialism.

Goebbels never doubted that he was a socialist. He understood Nazism to be a better and more plausible form of socialism than that propagated by Lenin. Instead of spreading itself across different nations, it would operate within the unit of the Volk.

So total is the cultural victory of the modern Left that the merely to recount this fact is jarring. But few at the time would have found it especially contentious. As George Watson put it in The Lost Literature of Socialism:

"It is now clear beyond all reasonable doubt that Hitler and his associates believed they were socialists, and that others, including democratic socialists, thought so too."

The clue is in the name. Subsequent generations of Leftists have tried to explain away the awkward nomenclature of the National Socialist German Workers’ Party as either a cynical PR stunt or an embarrassing coincidence. In fact, the name meant what it said.

Hitler told Hermann Rauschning, a Prussian who briefly worked for the Nazis before rejecting them and fleeing the country, that he had admired much of the thinking of the revolutionaries he had known as a young man; but he felt that they had been talkers, not doers. “I have put into practice what these peddlers and pen pushers have timidly begun,” he boasted, adding that “the whole of National Socialism” was “based on Marx”.

Marx’s error, Hitler believed, had been to foster class war instead of national unity – to set workers against industrialists instead of conscripting both groups into a corporatist order. His aim, he told his economic adviser, Otto Wagener, was to “convert the German Volk to socialism without simply killing off the old individualists” – by which he meant the bankers and factory owners who could, he thought, serve socialism better by generating revenue for the state. “What Marxism, Leninism and Stalinism failed to accomplish,” he told Wagener, “we shall be in a position to achieve.”

Leftist readers may by now be seething. Whenever I touch on this subject, it elicits an almost berserk reaction from people who think of themselves as progressives and see anti-fascism as part of their ideology. Well, chaps, maybe now you know how we conservatives feel when you loosely associate Nazism with “the Right”.

To be absolutely clear, I don’t believe that modern Leftists have subliminal Nazi leanings, or that their loathing of Hitler is in any way feigned. That’s not my argument. What I want to do, by holding up the mirror, is to take on the equally false idea that there is an ideological continuum between free-marketers and fascists.

The idea that Nazism is a more extreme form of conservatism has insinuated its way into popular culture. You hear it, not only when spotty students yell “fascist” at Tories, but when pundits talk of revolutionary anti-capitalist parties, such as the BNP and Golden Dawn, as “far Right”.

What is it based on, this connection? Little beyond a jejune sense that Left-wing means compassionate and Right-wing means nasty and fascists are nasty. When written down like that, the notion sounds idiotic, but think of the groups around the world that the BBC, for example, calls “Right-wing”: the Taliban, who want communal ownership of goods; the Iranian revolutionaries, who abolished the monarchy, seized industries and destroyed the middle class; Vladimir Zhirinovsky, who pined for Stalinism.

The “Nazis-were-far-Right” shtick is a symptom of the wider notion that “Right-wing” is a synonym for “baddie”.

One of my constituents once complained to the Beeb about a report on the repression of Mexico's indigenous peoples, in which the government was labelled Right-wing. The governing party, he pointed out, was a member of the Socialist International and, again, the give-away was in its name: Institutional Revolutionary Party. The BBC’s response was priceless. Yes, it accepted that the party was socialist, “but what our correspondent was trying to get across was that it is authoritarian”.

In fact, authoritarianism was the common feature of socialists of both National and Leninist varieties, who rushed to stick each other in prison camps or before firing squads. Each faction loathed the other as heretical, but both scorned free-market individualists as beyond redemption. Their battle was all the fiercer, as Hayek pointed out in 1944, because it was a battle between brothers.

Authoritarianism – or, to give it a less loaded name, the belief that state compulsion is justified in pursuit of a higher goal, such as scientific progress or greater equality – was traditionally a characteristic of the social democrats as much as of the revolutionaries.

Jonah Goldberg has chronicled the phenomenon at length in his magnum opus, Liberal Fascism. Lots of people take offence at his title, evidently without reading the book since, in the first few pages, Jonah reveals that the phrase is not his own. He is quoting that impeccable progressive H.G. Wells who, in 1932, told the Young Liberals that they must become “liberal fascists” and “enlightened Nazis”.

In those days, most prominent Leftists intellectuals, including Wells, Jack London, Havelock Ellis and the Webbs, tended to favour eugenics, convinced that only religious hang-ups were holding back the development of a healthier species. The unapologetic way in which they spelt out the consequences have, like Hitler’s actual words, been largely edited from our discourse. Here, for example, is George Bernard Shaw in 1933:

"Extermination must be put on a scientific basis if it is ever to be carried out humanely and apologetically as well as thoroughly… If we desire a certain type of civilisation and culture we must exterminate the sort of people who do not fit into it."

Eugenics, of course, topples easily into racism. Engels himself wrote of the “racial trash” – the groups who would necessarily be supplanted as scientific socialism came into its own. Season this outlook with a sprinkling of anti-capitalism and you often got Leftist anti-Semitism – something else we have edited from our memory, but which once went without saying. “How, as a socialist, can you not be an anti-Semite?” Hitler had asked his party members in 1920.

Are contemporary Leftist critics of Israel secretly anti-Semitic? No, not in the vast majority of cases. Are modern socialists inwardly yearning to put global warming sceptics in prison camps? Nope. Do Keynesians want the whole apparatus of corporatism, expressed by Mussolini as “everything in the state, nothing outside the state”? Again, no. There are idiots who discredit every cause, of course, but most people on the Left are sincere in their stated commitment to human rights, personal dignity and pluralism.

My beef with many (not all) Leftists is a simpler one. By refusing to return the compliment, by assuming a moral superiority, they make political dialogue almost impossible. Using the soubriquet “Right-wing” to mean “something undesirable” is a small but important example.

Next time you hear Leftists use the word fascist as a general insult, gently point out the difference between what they like to imagine the NSDAP stood for and what it actually proclaimed.

Hannan has a number of interesting Nazi posters with his article but not all are translated or translated well.  I therefore reproduce them with translations:

Workers of the mind and the fist choose the frontline soldier, Hitler.  Against hunger and desperation, choose Hitler

This poster is a bit hard to read but its text is all rendered clearly  here.  The body of the poster reads:  "Wir Arbeiter sind erwacht – wir wählen Liste 2 Nationalsozialisten"  -- which translates as:  "We workers are awoken.  We choose List 2, National Socialists"

Pennsylvania Teacher Gets Prison for Student Sex - Update

(East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania) Art teacher Cynthia Hartopp, 29, at East Stroudsburg High School North has pleaded guilty to engaging in sex with two students.

As a result, Hartopp has been sentenced to spend 15 to 48 months in prison.
In April of 2013 an investigation began into Hartopp having an inappropriate relationship with a 16-year-old male student. She was charged in June.

Then in August more charges were filed as Hartopp was accused of sexually assaulting a 17-year-old student.

At her sentencing with her family by her side, her father held back tears as he addressed the judge.

“As a parent, I have experienced humiliation and unending questions of ‘why?’ I am not here to condone Cynthia’s conduct and no way suggesting it’s morally justified. I know my daughter is remorseful.”
Reportedly, Hartopp will not get another teaching job.

Pennsylvania Teacher Accused of Sex Assault
[Previous 6/5/13 post]
(East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania) A 28-year-old art teacher at East Stroudsburg High School, Cynthia Hartopp, has been accused of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old student.

Hartopp faces charges of institutional sexual assault, corruption of minors and unlawful contact with minor.
Since she recently broke up with her boyfriend, she asked him in February if he wanted to "hang out with her after school," he told police. They began meeting at her apartment.

The first time at her apartment, they ate, watched television and played on the computer. In the subsequent five or six visits, they kissed while he touched, and attempted to touch, her body. The 16-year-old told police he wanted to have sex with her and he believed it was going to happen.

Police said the student recalled one text message where she asked if he was a virgin.

When police interviewed Ms. Hartopp on April 24, she admitted the student had been to her apartment on numerous occasions.
Hartopp was booked into custody at the Monroe County Correctional Facility.

Washington Teacher Gets Treatment for Sex with Boy, 12 - Update

Keshia T. Shaw

(Tacoma, Washington) Earlier today, former sixth-grade teacher at Gray Middle School Keshia Shaw pleaded guilty to raping a 12-year-old male student. She was sentenced to sex offender treatment.
Pierce County Superior Court Judge John McCarthy ordered Shaw to complete two more months in home detention with an electronic monitoring device and to begin sex-offender treatment.

Her treatment progress will be monitored by the court for five years.

She must also register as a sex offender and be subject to ongoing monitoring for life under a provision known as lifetime community custody.

One factor McCarthy considered in his sentence was Shaw's need for medical treatment. Her attorneys submitted a statement from Shaw's physician stating her need for specialized medical treatment for multiple sclerosis (MS) and other medical conditions.
So, no jail for sex with a 12-year-old. Quite compassionate, eh?

Teacher, 33, and Boy, 12
[Previous 7/3/12 post]
(Tacoma, Washington) A 33-year-old sixth-grade teacher at Gray Middle School, Keshia T. Shaw, has been accused of engaging in sex with a 12-year-old male student.

Shaw faces five counts of second-degree rape.
At end of his sixth grade year, the victim, then 12-years-old, had to retake a test in Shaw's classroom. During the test, the victim noticed Shaw wasn't wearing underwear under her dress, prosecutors wrote in court documents.

Shaw noticed him looking and asked if he was turned on, then took the victim to a nearby room where they had sex, detectives said.

About a week later, the victim stayed after school and they had sex again, documents said. Two months later, Shaw gave the victim a ride home where they then had sex in the victim's bedroom as the mother was at work, prosecutors said.

The victim went to another school for seventh grade, but in eighth grade, the victim ran away from home and went to Gray Middle School again to visit friends. He ran into Shaw, and they went into another room and had sex, detectives said. Shaw then drove the him to a bank where she withdrew $80, gave it to him, then drove to a parking lot and performed a sexual act with the victim, according to police.
Arraignment is scheduled for July 10.

Dem’s Try to Use FCC to Censor Anti-Obamacare Ads

What do Democrats do when a hard-hitting anti-Obamacare ad threatens the electoral prospects of a Democrat Congressman? Well… You unleash the lawyers. With any luck, you might even be able to use the weight of the FCC to muscle local stations into denying the ad any air time. Because, obviously, using government regulatory agencies to strong arm broadcasters into censoring political advertisements, is a tactic in total compliance with the intent of the First Amendment.

Julia Boonstra is currently suffering from Leukemia. And, until the implementation of Obamacare, she had insurance coverage that provided her with desired benefits. In fact, she was happy. Her condition was improving. Her treatments were working, and she was not driving herself into bankruptcy fighting a horrendous form of cancer… Then came Obamacare.

As is explained in the Americans for Prosperity (AFP) ad – aimed at Democrat Gary Peters – Julia was among the millions of Americans who saw their insurance evaporate as Obamacare implementation lumbered forward. And while she’s been able to retain the same doctor as before, her new Obamacare insurance has left her with an unpredictable schedule of out-of-pocket costs. In short: She liked her plan – she wasn’t able to keep her plan – and now she’s stuck with inadequate insurance that threatens her financial stability. Julia is now worse off (financially and physically) thanks to the President’s boondoggled web of regulation known affectionately as “Obamacare.”

But why allow little things (like Julia, the cancer survivor, losing her preferred healthcare) to interfere with the election of Democrats? Michigan Democrats, who support Gary Peters, have filed paperwork to get the ad pulled from the air. They’ve even threatened to have the FCC pull the broadcast licenses of any station that decides to air the ad.

So… Now the Democrats are going to go around threatening to strip broadcasters of their FCC license if they air ads that Democrats consider to be “misleading”? Don’t such authoritarian dreams of control give any other Americans a chill? Think of the irony: Democrats in Michigan are unleashing lawyers to censor the backlash created by Democrat lies.

Georgia Teacher and Several Students
[Previous 1/30/13 post]
(Charlton County, Georgia) A 32-year-old teacher at Charlton County High School, Danita Wilson, has been accused of engaging in sex with multiple students.

Wilson faces seven counts of sexual assault on a child.
The charges allege at least seven different students are involved, according to Stacey Carson, GBI Assistant Special Agent In Charge.

Carson said the alleged activity has been going on for more than a year. The young people involved are not all Wilson's students, but they are or were students at the school at one time.

The Charlton County School Board received a tip from an unknown source that was passed on to the Charlton County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday.
Wilson was booked into custody and released on $35,000 bond.

Prank Post

Matt Damon and Prankster George Clooney

Costars in the movie Monuments Men and a practical joke.
While the two were filming the World War II flick, Damon told the notorious prankster that he was trying to lose weight. Clooney's response? A caper that involved the wardrobe department giving Damon's costumes a little extra attention.

"He took in my wardrobe by an eighth of an inch, every other day," Damon, 43, told People at a press junket last week. "[He] had the wardrobe department do that because he knew that I was trying to lose weight.

"This was a job where I would go back to New York, where I was living with my family, and I would come back [to film in Europe] for two weeks," Damon continued. "And then I'd go back to New York, and every time I came back my pants were tighter, and I was like, 'Ugh, this is weird. I've been going to the gym!'"
Pretty good stunt, I suggest.
NFL set to introduce penalty for players who use the N-word during games

How amusing!  Blacks are close to the only users of the word.  Are dozens of blacks going to be thrown out of the game?  And if not, why not?

The NFL is expected to adopt penalties for using the N-word on the field that will be enacted starting this upcoming season.

A proposal currently circulating through the league’s competition committee seeks to impose a 15-yard penalty against the team of a player using the racial slur, with a second utterance resulting in ejection.

‘I will be totally shocked if the competition committee does not uphold us on what we're trying to do,’ Wooten said Saturday to a standing ovation during the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

‘We want this word to be policed from the parking lot to the equipment room to the locker room,’ he continued. ‘Secretaries, PR people, whoever, we want it eliminated completely and want it policed everywhere.’

Does dislike of homosexuality give you heart attacks?

An academic study has just emerged which says that it does. "Homophobia is bad for your health" is the intended message.  And the study itself is a refreshing piece of work that uses representative data, extensive controls, careful analysis and cautious wording.  It is far better than most academic journal articles I read.  So its conclusions should settle the matter?

Sadly, No.  The study is a correlational one so warrants no conclusions about cause.  Whether attitudes to homosexuals CAUSED the heart attacks or whether something associated with such attitudes caused the attacks is not known.  And the authors acknowledged that.  They suggest that certain health variables could be the "guilty" third factor.

And the elephant in the room there (I seem to be a master elephant detector) is of course IQ.  Unless they are motivated by fundamentalist religious convictions, anybody who admits to anti-homosexual attitudes these days has to be either dumb or very brave.  And bravery in the matter seems very rare. Homosexuals are sacred these days.  And low IQ people do have worse health.

And the correlation between health and attitudes is weak anyway so other factors could very well be involved.

And there are some signs that all is not well with the results anyway.  Both religiosity and conservatism showed negligible  correlations with "antigay" attitudes  --  where we would expect both of those to be strong predictors.  So the conclusions of the study are very dubious indeed.  I suspect that the underlying data was not robust enough to support the weight that the authors put on it.

The study is: Mark L. Hatzenbuehler, Anna Bellatorre, and Peter Muennig.  "Anti-Gay Prejudice and All-Cause Mortality Among Heterosexuals in the United States". American Journal of Public Health: February 2014, Vol. 104, No. 2, pp. 332-337.

Despite its inconclusiveness, it will no doubt be quoted joyously and uncritically for many years to come.  People who can believe that women and men are really the same will believe anything.

California Woman Gets Prison for Sex with Boy, 12 - Update

(Orange County, California) Fountain Valley woman Patricia Ann Serrano, 45, pleaded guilty last month to lewd acts with a child under 14, forgery and attempted petty theft.

As a result, Serrano was sentenced to six years in prison and ordered to register as a sex offender for life.
For the forgery, Serrano received two years in prison that will be served concurrently with her six-year sentence, according to the district attorney's office.

The victim was friends with Serrano's son, prosecutors said. In addition to sending the boy sexual text messages, Serrano had sex with him twice in October 2011 — once in her home and once in her car.

At one point, the boy's mom became suspicious when she discovered her son and Serrano together in a locked room. At some point thereafter, the mother reported Serrano to the police.

Mexican Drug Kingpin Arrested

Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman

(El Paso, Texas)
The world's most wanted drug kingpin, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, was arrested last night in Mazatlan, Mexico, said Phil Jordan, former director of the El Paso Intelligence Center.[…]

The Associated Press reported that Guzman, 56, was found at a hotel with an unidentified woman. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and the Marshals Service were "heavily involved" in the capture, the official, was not authorized to discuss the arrest and spoke on condition of anonymity, told the AP. No shots were fired.

Mexican federal officials said they transported the man suspected to be Guzman to Mexico City to confirm his identity through fingerprints and DNA.
Reportedly, proceeds from his illicit drug operations made Guzman one of the world's richest and most powerful men.

Texas Teacher Gets No Jail for Sex with Student - Update

(Brazosport, Texas) Former Brazosport ISD teacher Nikki Scherwitz has pleaded guilty to having an inappropriate relationship with a student.

Scherwitz was sentenced to 10 years of probation and fined $5,000.
Scherwitz resigned from her job at Brazosport High School last year when she was questioned about the relationship. Police say it had been going on for weeks, but didn’t come to light until Scherwitz showed up at an after-prom party.

Some students were shocked when they learned she got probation.

"The men get 25 to life, but a woman gets a slap on the wrist with only a $5,000 fine," said Mario Salinas, a student at Brazosport High School.

"If it was a guy, a male teacher with a female student, it wouldn’t be the same," agreed Oscar Guttierrez, another student.

Prosecutors said they agreed to the plea deal because the student was nearly 17 and Sherwitz agree to send apologies to the mother and the district.
Scherwitz was also banned from teaching.

(Brazosport, Texas) A 25-year-old English teacher who recently resigned from Brazosport High School, Nikki Marlise Scherwitz, has been accused of engaging in sex with a 16-year-old student at an after-prom party.

Scherwitz faces charges of sexual assault of a child and improper relationship between an educator and a student.
Brazosport ISD officials initially received a report alleging a female teacher had been “in the presence of students at an off-campus, non-school event,” district spokeswoman Tami Sophia said in a news release.

The “non-school event” was an after-prom party where alcohol and marijuana were present, said Freeport police Interim Lt. Raymond Garivey, who is supervising the criminal investigations division.
Scherwitz was booked into custody at the Freeport Jail with bond set at $50,000.

Protestant/Catholic rivalry

As the great steamroller of secularism rumbles towards them, Christians generally have become much less mindful of denominational differences between them.  Unbelief and Leftist oppression have become the current enemies for all Christians.  So true Protestants (NOT including Anglicans and other "social" churches, who are generally too "modern" to believe in anything much) appreciate the solid opposition to abortion and homosexuality from Catholics, for instance.  And Christians do need to band together.  The secular steamroller has largely crushed belief and church loyalty in Britain, Western Europe and Australia.  Only in the USA, Russia, Poland and Latin America is belief in the risen Lord still strong.

Young people therefore may not know that Protestant/Catholic rivalry was once intense -- and not long ago at that.  Within living memory we were all rather like Ulstermen.

When I was a kid I went to a State (government) school and the Catholic school was just down the road.  And we all used to walk home in those days -- none of that namby-pamby nonsense of parents picking us up.  So there was opportunity for us to get into mischief.  And one sort of mischief was that the kids from the two schools used to chant sectarian rhymes at one another.  I suppose it was better than coming to blows.  I remember the rhymes very well but I am a bit embarassed about it all now so I will repeat only one of the rhymes:  "Mary, Mary, mother of God, baked a cake and it was a sod".  Apologies from my 70-year old self for my 10-year old self.

And at that time Protestants and Catholics even tended to go to different shops.  Two big Department stores in Brisbane exemplified that:  McWhirter's and T.C. Beirne's.  Protestants shopped at McWhirter's and Catholics shopped at T.C. Beirne's.  It actually felt weird to go into the "wrong" one of those.

And the thought of a Catholic marrying a Protestant was quite rage-provoking.  A Protestant father contemplating one of his children marrying a Catholic would utter the most dire warnings against it and back up the warming with threats of disinheritance etc.  Catholics were equally vehemently against "intermarriage" but would acquiesce in it as long as the children of the marriage were brought up Catholic.

Now here is the amusing thing:  Despite all the rage and heartburn, young Catholic and young Protestant people still married one-another at a great rate.  I take some interest in genealogy and when you look at genealogical records in Australia, the number of intermarriages is astounding.  It is true of my own relatives and forebears, of course. I have both Irish and English ancestry.   Young Catholics and Protestants clearly found one-another fascinating.  Forbidden fruit?  That could be part of it.

There is a rather good novel by Ruth Park called "Harp in the South" about a Catholic family in Australia about 100 years ago which captures it all rather well.  There are two friends -- one Catholic and one Protestant  -- who get on very well with one-another  -- except on one day of the year -- the day when the Orange order marches and they sing of how "King Billy slew the Papish crew at the battle of Boyne water" etc.

So even in the old days there was goodwill lurking, despite different traditions

China Training for War with Japan

Senkaku Islands

Source:
China is stepping up its training for a "short, sharp war" designed to seize the disputed Senkaku islands from Japan, according to the head of US naval intelligence in the Pacific.

Addressing a conference sponsored by the US Naval Institute in San Diego, California, Captain James Fannell said the recent Missing Action 2013 exercises were training for the invasion of the uninhabited archipelago, which China claims as its sovereign territory and refers to as the Diaoyutai Islands.

"We concluded that the [People's Liberation Army] has been given the new task to be able to conduct a short, sharp war to destroy Japanese forces in the East China Sea, following with what can only be expected as the seizure of the Senkakus or even a southern Ryukyu island," said Capt. Fannell, director of intelligence for the US Pacific Fleet.
Seems imminent, eh?

Oregon Teens Carve Swastika on Classmate's Head

Jenna Montgomery, Blue Kalmbach and Jess Taylor

(Portland, Oregon)
A group of Portland teenagers is being charged as adults in the case of a 16-year-old David Douglas High School student who was lured into a shed and had a swastika carved into his forehead with a box cutter.

Investigators said the kidnapping and torture happened on Southeast 111th Avenue during the snowstorm earlier this month.

Jess Taylor, 17, Jenna Montgomery and Blue Kalbach, both 15, lured the boy into a shed behind a house, according to police, and attacked him with a crowbar while also shooting him with a BB gun at close range in the chest, hand and groin. They then carved the swastika into his head by using a box cutter, police said.

The victim finally escaped and ran to a nearby auto shop for help, where employee Julio Montoya said he couldn't believe the teen's injuries.

Missouri Kidnapping and Murder

Hailey Owens

(Springfield, Missouri) Middle school football coach Craig Michael Wood, 45, has been charged with the abduction and murder of 10-year-old fourth-grader Hailey Owens. Owens was taken as she walked home from a friend's house.

Wood faces counts of first-degree murder, kidnapping and armed criminal action.

Reportedly, Hailey Owens had been shot in the head.
Wood was inside a truck parked at his small, single-story home in Springfield when police arrested him Tuesday night.

A probable cause statement released Wednesday said that Wood was holding a roll of duct tape when officers arrived and that the girl’s body was found stuffed inside two garbage bags in a basement where the floor was still damp from bleach.
Disgusting!

Political Orientation and Moral Conviction

Comments on: "Political Orientation and Moral Conviction: A Conservative Advantage or an Equal Opportunity Motivator of Political Engagement?"  by Linda J. Skitka G. Scott Morgan Daniel C. Wisneski, University of Illinois at Chicago (Preprint here (PDF)

There is a paper coming out in a book edited by Joe Forgas that tends to throw Haidt's findings into a cocked hat.  Haidt found  that conservatives were more morally complex than are liberals.  Since liberals often proclaim:  "There is no such thing as right and wrong", that is not exactly a surprising finding. Liberals do nonetheless use moral language:  "Racism is wrong" etc., but I showed long ago (Ray, 1974) that they do so only as a matter of convenience.  For them it is just a device to influence others. Any such beliefs are not deeply held.

I'm critical of a few points in the introducion to the paper  -- e.g. the homage to the risible Lakoff, who confuses the diachronic  with the synchronic, but I think the big problems in the paper are methodological.  The use of meta-analyses is in principle admirable but in practice can deteriorate severely where the author has a barrow to push.  One of the better known studies in this field did to my particular knowledge omit from consideration around 100 relevant studies  -- in order to come to fairly conventional conclusions.

Another problem is  the  shotgun approach to sampling.  Lumping general population samples in the with student samples is most incautious.  The two groups often give very different results.  One one occasion I repeated a study I had dome among students using a sample of army conscripts.  A correlation of .808 among students dropped to something negligible with the more representative sample.  I never wrote that study up but I probably should have.  It was in the era when "positive" results were essential so it would probably not have been published anyway.

And I am pretty confident that something similar would have happened in the Skitka work.  The students would have given complex responses and the ordinary folk would have given much simpler responses.  So combining the two would have given you medium complexity across the board and erased Right/Left differences.  In short, I don't think Skitka & co, have made their case.

Mother Jones has however welcomed the study.  The Left like to think they are moral, despite their propensity for mass murder.

Small Hands and Big Guns

Apparently there are no minimum physical requirements for law enforcers in the UK.

Mars Trip Prohibited by Islam

(United Arab Emirates)
Promoting or being involved in a one-way trip to the Red Planet is prohibited in Islam, a fatwa committee under the General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowment in the UAE has ruled.

“Such a one-way journey poses a real risk to life, and that can never be justified in Islam,” the committee said. “There is a possibility that an individual who travels to planet Mars may not be able to remain alive there, and is more vulnerable to death.”
Interesting since the same Islamic authorities don't ever voice a squeak when one of their followers straps on explosives for detonation on a bus full of innocent people.

Must not disrespect art history

What good is it?  Either you like a piece of art or you don't,  as far as I can see  -- JR

President Obama has apologized to art history professor Ann Collins Johns from the University of Texas at Austin. Johns had taken offense to the president's comments about the job prospects of art history majors last month, and sent him an email defending the academic merit of art history.

The president replied with a hand-written note, which shocked Johns, a self-described "Obama fan."

"Ann —

Let me apologize for my off-the-cuff remarks. I was making a point about the jobs market, not the value of art history. As it so happens, art history was one of my favorite subjects in high school, and it has helped me take in a great deal of joy in my life that I might otherwise have missed.

So please pass on my apology for the glib remark to the entire department, and understand that I was trying to encourage young people who may not be predisposed to a four year college experience to be open to technical training that can lead them to an honorable career.

Sincerely,

Barack Obama"

The offending remarks last month were spoken at a GE manufacturing plant as President Obama was trying to promote the manufacturing sector.

“Manufacturing jobs typically pay well,” he said. “We want to encourage more of them.”

And while some young people might not think of the skilled trades as a lucrative career, Obama added, they can probably earn more “than they might than [with] an art history degree.”

Art historians were not pleased with Obama's rhetoric.

"We're relieved to finally have resolution in this case and a satisfactory verdict as well as relief for the schools, so that they can regain some of the money that is well-needed out there to continue the many programs they have," said John Hunkiar, chief of safety, security and emergency management for Leon County Schools.
Bennett was also ordered to get a job and start paying back the money owed within 30 days after release from jail.

Heh!

Here’s something illuminating about female millionaires.

Turns out, they prefer conservative men in and out of bed. Darren Shuster, the publicist for MillionaireMatch.com, the company that commissioned a survey, stressed in an email, “Especially in bed. Don’t kill the messenger.”

Hot off the presses from Silicon Valley, MillionaireMatch.com has released the results of a survey showing that show that rich ass females prefer their men on the “right” side of the political spectrum. According to site stats, 81.4 percent of female millionaires prefer a conservative man rather than someone liberal (this includes Republicans, Democrats and independents). A whopping 76.6 percent of Democrat female millionaires said they “would prefer to date a conservative man.”

Some comments from rich females to the site:

“I don’t want a liberal man, I want someone who believes in a traditional family.”

“I want to be with a man who is ambitious, liberal men simply aren’t as ambitious.”

“Conservative men plan for the future, they’re in it for the long run.”

“Liberal men are less masculine.”

“Politics doesn’t matter to me when we’re inside the bedroom.”

“I’m very liberal, but I’m open to other opinions.”

Two comments that could infuriate some women involved females who remarked on how conservative males take care of the female financially and how conservative males perform in bed.

One of the surveyed women explained why she believes conservative men are more appealing: “Simply put, conservative men are real men. They are the breadwinners, they wear the pants and they treat you like a lady.”

And of the women surveyed, 85 percent apparently agreed that conservative men are better in bed.

Said one woman, “Conservative men have so much masculine energy, they’re dominant.”

Gay Health Costs

Source:
The government’s own statistics affirm that LGBT citizens are responsible for an enormously disproportionate share of health care costs, which now will be placed on the backs of healthy citizens under the Affordable Health Care Act, known commonly as Obamacare.

As WND reported, the Obama administration’s emphasis on enrolling the LGBT community in Obamacare strongly suggests it has an unspoken agenda of lifting the financial burden from a demographic that overwhelmingly votes Democrat.

Medical research has demonstrated the LGBT community is disproportionately susceptible to a wide variety of health problems aside from HIV/AIDS, including mental illness and suicide, alcoholism, drug addiction and substance abuse.

Federally funded Medical Center censors Fox News

I imagine the only thing worse than being forced to watch CNN inside an airport terminal is being forced to watch it in a doctor’s office.

So you can imagine my surprise when I discovered a Michigan health care facility, funded by federal tax dollars, blocked Fox News Channel from its waiting room television sets.

The president of Family Health Care directed staff to block Fox News after a board member complained about our network’s coverage of the Affordable Care Act, an employee told me.

“The board member complained that patients were turning the channel to Fox News,” said the employee who asked not to be identified for reasons related to the unemployment line. “They are pro-ObamaCare and they felt (Fox’s) stance did not mesh with our stance.”

Family Health Care is a private, non-profit business that operates community health centers in five Michigan towns. According to the employee, the health centers have ObamaCare facilitators on site to help people apply for the program.

The employee provided me a copy of an internal office memorandum that confirms the home of “Fair & Balanced” news is blocked.

“A while ago Kathy Sather had asked all sites not to air the Fox News channel on the public waiting room TV’s,” wrote a network manager in an email to staff members on Feb. 4. “Today I blocked the channel on both the medical and dental waiting rooms.”

Sather is president of Family Health Care.

“I did check with staff and they mentioned often the visitors are changing channels on the TV’s,” the network manager wrote. “I now have both TV’s blocking that channel, so the public won’t be able to change the station. If anyone asks for the TV to be put on that channel please let them know we cannot air that channel.”

That edict didn’t set well with the employee who contacted me.

“I feel like we are being manipulated,” the employee said. “Who are they to say you can’t watch something? If the patient wants to put on Fox they should be able to put on Fox.”

Back in Michigan, the employee told me Sather’s explanation is a bunch of “baloney.”

The employee said that there were no complaints from patients – only a board member of the organization.

“It’s all very politically correct,” the employee said. “This complaint thing is baloney. They don’t want anyone to get the idea that affordable care is not good.”

Florida Teen Gets Jail for Underage Sex - Update

(Sebastian, Florida) Last October, former Sebastian River High School student Kaitlyn Hunt was sentenced in accordance with a plea agreement to three months in jail for engaging in a lesbian relationship with a 14-year-old girl.

Hunt, 19, was also sentenced to two years of house arrest and three years of state supervision. Additionally, if Hunt avoids trouble for 10 years, she won't have to register as a sex offender.

In December, Hunt was released from jail. She reportedly has moved on and now pursues her lesbian proclivities with an older woman.
Hunt confirmed that she’s opening a new chapter of her life with a much older girlfriend—a 27-year-old woman named Latasha Thomas.
I suggest Hunt will see much heartache in her future.

Florida Student Faces Lewd & Lascivious Charges
[Previous 5/19/13 post]
(Sebastian, Florida) An 18-year-old student at Sebastian River High School, Kaitlyn Hunt, has been accused of engaging in a lesbian relationship with an underage girl.

Hunt faces counts of felony lewd and lascivious battery on a child ages 12 to 16.
In September, after Hunt turned 18, she and the other girl, a freshman, began dating and expressed their relationship in “intimate ways,” the family said.

But when the basketball coach found out about their relationship, Hunt was thrown off the team and the other girl’s parents were notified.

The parents then told police, and a phone call was recorded between their daughter and Hunt in which the girls discussed their relationship, Gay said.

The age of consent in Florida is 18.
Hunt was expelled from Sebastian River High School.

California Teacher Guilty of Child Abuse

(Antioch, California) Last Friday a special-education teacher formerly at Mno Grant Elementary School, Theresa Allen-Caulboy, pleaded guilty in accordance with a plea agreement to child abuse charges. Allen-Caulboy reportedly slapped, pinched and verbally abused her students.

Allen-Caulboy has admitted to one felony count of child abuse and two misdemeanor charges.
According to the terms of the agreement, Allen-Caulboy must serve six months in county jail (the first 45 days in custody, and the rest on electronic home detention), surrender her teaching credential and stay away from the school, students and aides with whom she worked.

In addition, Allen-Caulboy waived all rights to appeal and is responsible for any costs associated with the emotional distress she caused the students, some of whom are nonverbal.

"It was an early admission of guilt," said deputy district attorney Chad Mahalich. "It was for a felony conviction when she had no record before. She can't teach. She's getting anger management (as part of the agreement). Nothing's going to make it OK, but this was a good resolution to allow people to move on with their lives and heal."
Speaking on behalf of Allen-Caulboy, defense attorney Elizabeth Grossman apologized to parents and classroom aides.

Pennsylvania Woman Accused of Craigslist Murder

Miranda Barbour

(Sunbury, Pennsylvania)
A Pennsylvania woman charged in the November slaying of a man she and her husband met through Craigslist has told a newspaper that she killed many more victims, and authorities told CNN Sunday they are investigating the woman's shocking claims.

A law enforcement source close to the investigation said Miranda Barbour's new claims could be "the real deal." "It's conceivable," the source said, who did not want to be identified because of the ongoing investigation.

From prison on Friday, the 19-year-old Barbour told a reporter for the Daily Item in Sunbury, Pennsylvania, that she participated in at least 22 killings in the past six years in Alaska, Texas, North Carolina and California.

"When I hit 22, I stopped counting," Barbour is quoted as saying in a phone interview from Northumberland County Prison on Friday night. "I can pinpoint on a map where you can find them."
Investigators are feverishly working to verify Barbour's claims. She is currently in custody at the Northumberland County Prison.

Carolina Woman Arrested for Failing to Return Video Rental

Finley faces a charge of failing to return a videocassette.
The woman failed to return the video within the 72 hour rental limit, eventually leading up to her arrest 9 years later.

Reports claim that Finley was sent several certified letters after the rental store owner filed an arrest warrant with the Pickens County magistrate. She was also allegedly served a certified warrant in September 2005.
Finley was booked and subsequently released on $2,000 bond.

Must not show Obama kicking a door

On October 17, 2013, an email to the Students’ Society of McGill University (SSMU) listserv was sent out including the phrase “Honestly midterms get out of here” and a link to a .GIF showing a clip from the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. The clip contained footage from a Barack Obama press conference that had been digitally altered to show the president leave by aggressively kicking a door.

A complaint relating to this image was made under SSMU’s Equity Policy. According to the policy, SSMU equity officers are responsible for investigating complaints and making recommendations, which can include letters of apology or dismissal from a position within the SSMU. Per Section 11.5 of the policy, “Recommendations for resolution made by the Equity Officers shall be considered binding unless two-thirds of Legislative Council votes against them.”

Two weeks ago, SSMU’s VP Internal Brian Farnan sent out a message stating, in part, “The image in question was an extension of the cultural, historical and living legacy surrounding people of color – particularly young men – being portrayed as violent in contemporary culture and media. By using this particular image of President Obama, I unknowingly perpetuated this living legacy and subsequently allowed a medium of SSMU’s communication to become the site of a microaggression; for this, I am deeply sorry.”

This apology was the outcome of an investigation under the Equity Policy. According to the McGill Tribune, “The apology has received widespread attention, much of it critical.”

Unionization Rejected

(Chattanooga, Tennessee)
Just 87 votes at the Volkswagen plant in Tennessee separated the United Auto Workers union from what would have been its first successful organization of workers at a foreign automaker in the South.

Instead of celebrating a potential watershed moment for labor politics in the region, UAW supporters were left crestfallen by the 712-626 vote against union representation in the election that ended Friday night.

The result stunned many labor experts who expected a UAW win because Volkswagen tacitly endorsed the union and even allowed organizers into the Chattanooga factory to make sales pitches.
The employees have spoken.
