Shuttle Landing Site in France

From the Stars and Stripes:

The United States and France have agreed to establish an emergency landing site for the shuttle at Istres air base, north of Marseille.

The agreement allows Americans to use the base during shuttle launches only. Istres was selected because it has one of the longest runways in Europe, three miles.
