(Marion, Ohio) First noticed at a microwave-popcorn plant in Jasper, Missouri, symptoms of abnormal lung function in 29 individuals have been found at a Conagra Snack Foods facility in Marion. About two-thirds of the 205 workers were tested and investigators from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) found that "workers who mix oil and flavorings" exhibited the symptoms. Use of respirators was recommended and implemented, according to spokesman Bob McKeon.
When mixed with other popcorn flavoring ingredients, a chemical called diacetyl has demonstrated toxicity in laboratory animals and is of primary concern to the CDC.
Also of note is.
"Seventy-two percent of those people smoke," McKeon said. "You know, smoking might have something to do with this."Ya' think, Bob?
