EPA Visits Toronto on Trash Problem

Responsible on Being American in T.O., Debbye gave me a pointer to this story. The Toronto Sun describes this week's visit to the city by representatives of the US Environmental Protection Agency to review and discuss the Canadian trash controversy (see here for details). The primary issues of focus for the EPA visitors were US national security concerns about what's in the trash and pursuing ways to reduce the amount of trash trucked to the Michigan.

Angelo Bacopoulos, general manager of solid waste for Toronto, recognized the concerns on the contents of the trash trucks by stating:
"There is a mish-mash of stuff in our trucks," he said. "It can be an ideal spot to smuggle radioactive goods."
The General Manager's matter-of-fact assessment is very disturbing. Hopefully, the US officials leave with the same feeling of uneasiness this writer possesses about the traffic jam of trash trucks crossing the border.

(Update - 12/05/03, 1245) It would be a mistake if I didn't mention Debbye's post on the subject of the EPA visit to Toronto. Being American in T.O. is not only the name of her site, it is an indication that she has first-hand knowledge and interest in the subject.
