Gavin Newsom Elected Mayor of San Francisco
By a mere 11,000 votes, Democrat Gavin Newsom defeated Green Party candidate Matt Gonzalez to become the 42nd mayor of the city of San Francisco. Since he campaigned on the issue of halting pay checks to homeless people and curbing panhandling, it will be interesting to see if he can live up to his promises. If he does, expect massive protest demonstrations causing traffic jams. Hell, it's San Francisco. They don't need a reason for massive protest demonstrations. [Hat tip: OTB]
Gonzalez's poll numbers were impressive. He captured 47 percent of the votes while representing the Greenies who comprise only 3 percent of registered voters. He got strong support from the sitting-around-smoking-weed-listening-to-poetry constituency which usually forgets to vote.
