This has to be somewhat scandalous. According to a report in The Times of India, Mahatma Gandhi's great-granddaughter has written a tell-all book about the family which alleges that Gandhi enslaved his son throughout his lifetime.
Controversially titled Gandhi's Prisoner? The Life of Gandhi's Son, Manilal, the 400-page book released last week is written by Uma Dhuphelia-Mesthrie and explores the Gandhi family's early years in South Africa in the early 1900s.Apparently, Gandhi discovered the right way to live and didn't want his offspring to make mistakes by acting independently. Evidently, Gandhi was an enigma, believing in independence and enslavement simultaneously. I wonder if any adherents of Gandhi's philosophy will be troubled by the apparent contradiction. Probably not.

"Manilal didn't have a choice. He wanted to be a doctor but Gandhi didn't allow him to study at all. He would have like to marry a particular woman but his father wouldn't allow that," Dhuphelia-Mesthrie told AFP.
