Madrid Bombed
At the beginning of a holiday weekend, five gas stations were bombed about 2 hours ago in Madrid, Spain. Casualties thus far are reported to be minor injuries only. ETA, a separatist Basque independence and terrorist group, is blamed. The Basque newspaper Gara had issued a warning that five bombs were placed and set to explode at 1730 GMT (1230 EST). It's been reported that the explosions were low intensity and caused little damage.
It's appropriate to note that the Spanish public offered appeasement to terrorists earlier this year by electing a socialist government and withdrawing support from the U.S.-led coalition effort in Iraq. Today's bombings provide some support for the contention that bowing to terrorist demands just encourages more terrorism. I think the Spanish electorate is a lock for this year's Neville Chamberlain Award.
