Arriving a few hours ago (about 10am local) in the Indonesian province of Aceh, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan started coordinating by saying he wanted $1 billion. It's not clear how the actual relief work being done by the US military will be impacted by Annan's coordinating.
Meanwhile, coordinator Annan was hailed by French President Jacques Chirac at a gathering of foreign ambassadors in Paris.
Chirac praised Annan for his "determined and tireless action" and called him "a man of peace, of conviction, of courage and of integrity."Obviously, Chirac's movie-star characterization of Annan is naked brown-nosing with the goal of muffling any criticism of France for contributing only a token toward the billion-dollar coordinating bill.
