Marburg Virus Deaths Climb to 113 in Angola
(Luanda, Angola) The outbreak of the deadly Ebola-like Marburg virus in Angola has killed 113 people and more fatalities are anticipated. Almost all of the deaths, including two hospital nurses, have occurred in the northern province of Uige. According to the provincial governor, Antonio Bento Kangulo, two doctors have also been infected. World Health Organization officials believe the epidemic is isolated primarily to the northern border region of Angola.
Marburg is a rare but highly fatal form of hemorrhagic fever which affects both humans and other primates. There currently is no specific vaccine nor treatment for the disease.
