Al Gore to Get Lifetime Award for Internet

For some not-widely-known reason, there are people who imagine that Al Gore is still strong in the Democratic Party. Therefore, the country is periodically subjected to efforts to keep Gore's political torch brightly lit. The latest effort is spearheaded by Tiffany Shlain, founder of the Webby Awards, who plans on giving Al Gore "lifetime" recognition for three decades of "amazing work" contributing to the Internet.

Call me flummoxed on two counts. First, as a political player, Al Gore can't be looking at anything more than the occasional pinch hitting slot. There's no indication that he'll ever again be in a national leadership position. And, secondly, if Al Gore really wants a legacy tied to the Internet, he should get the appropriate information out to the public. It's my guess that the overwhelming majority of Internet users have no idea that Al Gore has ever looked at a keyboard. I'm one of them.

In my opinion, if Gore wants to rehabilitate his image, it would be best to avoid mentioning the Internet. People have been conditioned for a joke when they see the words "Gore" and "Internet" in the same sentence. It's similar to "Quayle" and "potato" or "Clinton" and "cigar." Quite chuckle-worthy.

Kevin at Wizbang has the whole story. Go visit. It's a hoot.
