Explosion Outside British Consulate in NYC
At the same time Britons were voting in a national election, a small explosive device detonated outside the East Side building housing the British Consulate on Third Avenue. Streets have been closed while authorities investigate. The device went off about 3:45am and blew out the front window of the building.
[Update 1030am EDT] Another report states that two relatively unsophisticated explosive devices were placed in a cement planter outside the building. The explosions caused no injuries. Investigators pieced together schrapnel to determine that the devices were toy grenades filled with gunpowder and without timing devices. The motive and the perpetrator remain unknown.
