Plea Negotiations Break Down in Debra Lafave Case

(Tampa, Florida) At a hearing earlier today, Debra Lafave's lawyer, John Fitzgibbons, rejected the prosecution's plea offer, saying it entailed too much prison time.

From WFTV.com:
"To place an attractive young woman in that kind of hell hole is like putting a piece of raw meat in with the lions," said Fitzgibbons, who wouldn't talk about details of the negotiations. "I'm not sure she would survive."
Kind of dramatic, don't you think?

As to current status of the case, it appears that Debra Lafave will go to court in December and plead insanity. So far, she's been evaluated by mental health professionals for both the prosecution and the defense and they lined up according to their respective employers. Judge Wayne Timmerman will appoint two more mental health types to get more opinions.

Nevertheless, the defense is sticking to its story that Lafave was insane when she allegedly engaged in sex with a 14-year-old boy. I'm guessing that it will probably be a tough sell.

[Update 11/22/05]

Debra Lafave pleads guilty and gets no jail.
