ACLU Protests Audio/Video in Taxicabs

(Las Vegas, Nevada) The American Civil Liberties Union has been aggressively opposing the Navada Taxicab Authority in its efforts to specify requirements for surveillance cameras and audio equipment in taxis. The two groups have been at odds on the issue for at least year and the controversy will likely continue even though the Nevada Attorney General recently ruled that audio and video in taxis are legal. The Taxicab Authority is currently drafting new regulations for surveillance in cabs.

Furthermore, it's estimated that half of all cabs in Las Vegas have already been operating with cameras and, so far, there have been no objections from customers. Only the ACLU and some drivers have complained with more opposition expressed regarding audio surveillance than video. It appears that the ACLU believes taxicab riders have a right to privacy in their conversations.
