According to a recently-filed court document, the Bonanno crime family has allegedly put a mobster into the New York Post newspaper organization. The information came from a conversation secretly taped by a mob associate wearing a wire.
From NYDailyNews.com:
In a January jailhouse conversation, former Bonanno acting boss Vincent (Vinny Gorgeous) Basciano boasts, "The Post we still have 'cause Vinny Bionics (is) there."In preparation for Basciano's upcoming racketeering trial, federal prosecutors filed papers containing a portion of the taped conversation. The Post hasn't commented yet.
Sources said "Vinny Bionics" is a Bonanno soldier still employed at the newspaper.
Basciano - unaware that then-Bonanno boss Joseph Massino was wearing a hidden wire - blabbed: "(Vinny Bionics) said the Westside was trying to move into The Post. I said, 'Junior, we can't give up the Post.'"
"The Westside" is a reference to the Genovese crime family.
If this allegation is true, it should surprise no one. I'm definitely not surprised. The mob has, at one time or another, tainted every business operation in the Tri-State area. Mob involvement in the newspaper business is even mentioned in the Godfather. Consequently, the only reason mob involvement with a newspaper is news is that it's become part of a court proceeding.
