According to the World Wildlife Fund, a new, mysterious, cat-like carnivore is believed to have been discovered on the island of Borneo.
From Xinhua.com:
If confirmed, the animal -- which has dark red fur and a long, bushy tail -- would be first new carnivore species discovered on the island since 1895, when the Borneo ferret-badger was found, the organization said. Most experts believe that the animal is a new species. Confirmation awaits capture of a live specimen which will likely prompt designation as an endangered species and lawsuits to establish a few hundred square miles of Borneo as its protected habitat.
Cameras set up to photograph wildlife in Kayan Mentarang National Park on the Indonesian side of Borneo island have twice captured images of the animal, said Stephan Wulffraat, a Dutch biologist who is coordinating the fund's research into the species.
I've heard that the length of the Endangered Species List is directly proportional to the number of biologists nosing around for new animals.
