(Marble Falls, Texas) A 32-year-old teacher at R.J. Richey Middle School, Danya Jean Elsasser, was indicted by a Burnet County grand jury last March for an improper relationship between educator and student. Elsasser allegedly engaged in improper kissing and sexual touching of an 18-year-old male high school student. The student stated he had sexual contact with Elsasser from last November until January. After being booked into the Burnet County Jail, Elsasser was released on $10,000 bond.
Interestingly, the 18-year-old alleged victim is an adult but, under a new Texas law, it's a felony for a teacher to engage in sexual behavior with a student, regardless of age. One could say that a 32-year-old with an 18-year-old is marginally less offensive than if the student were a minor, although the age difference is still troubling. It's also noteworthy to mention that Elsasser's husband, Richard, is the principal at R.J. Richey Middle School.
The Burnet Police Department continues its investigation. If convicted of the charges against her, Elsasser faces a possible 30 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
