Close Your Back Door
Virtually every day and frequently several times a day, groups in society claim that their adversaries are out of touch with the American public. In opposition are Republicans and Democrats, the House of Representatives and the Senate, business and labor unions, abortionists and pro-life groups, and so on, and so on. Predictably, all the polarizing issues are framed by the media as popularity contests with poll after conflicting poll created to seemingly allow every group a chance to claim the most support among the American people.
That is, except for the American Civil Liberties Union. Arguably, it is one group that seems to consistently be on the wrong side of the public opinion equation. In itself, that's neither good nor bad. However, it is telling that the ACLU seems to rarely come up with something that the people support. Just the laws of probability would seem to dictate that the ACLU would get significant agreement on a noticeable number of its issues. I haven't seen it.
Examples abound and, rather than reproduce them here, I'll refer the readers to a post at Stop The ACLU. Detailed therein are the contentious issues of Christmas, abortion, polygamy, sex education, and others where polling data indicate that the ACLU's positions are summarily rejected by most of the public. As such, the ACLU has to rely on the courts to further its agenda which, I maintain, is an agenda dedicated to attacking all the traditions and institutions that have made America the greatest nation on Earth.
In conclusion, when you hear someone assert that the ACLU has the support of the majority of the American people, close your back door. Someone is pumping smoke into it.
