(Crawfordsville, Indiana) Putting unnecessary holes into one's body can be hazardous to one's health.
From KIROTV.com:
An Indiana teenager who decided to get her breasts pierced for her 18th birthday faces reconstructive surgery after a flesh-destroying infection forced doctors to remove her left breast.Edington was diagnosed with necrotizing fasciitis, or gas gangrene, and has already undergone three surgeries. She'll need breast reconstruction.
Stephanie Edington remained hospitalized Friday at the Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis, where surgeons also removed lymph nodes and infected skin up to her collar bone.
Edington's doctor, Robert Goulet Jr., said the piercing likely wasn't responsible for the infection. I agree. Obviously, bacteria caused the infection. Even so, the piercing itself isn't blameless. If a hole were not poked into her body, the bacteria would not have entered.
