It's not a mass migration, rather a message of dissatisfaction. Some of the gilding of the Golden State is rubbing off.
From KSBY.com:
For the first time in almost a decade, more people moved out of California last year than moved in.The high cost of housing is cited as the primary reason people leave. I'd suggest that high taxes and crime have also been factors prompting folks to vamoose.
According to the California Department of Finance, the state recorded a net loss of about 29,000 people in 2005. The most common destinations for the newest ex-Californians were Arizona, Nevada, Texas, Washington and Oregon.
Nevertheless, 29,000 is a minute number when compared to the 37 million or so residents of the state. Also, the numbers don't reflect the "undocumented" hordes of illegal aliens in the state.
