Murdered Homeless Stuffed in Manholes

One of the two men facing preliminary charges of murder in the slayings of four fellow homeless men confessed that the two had committed the slayings and later hid the bodies in manholes, police said.

Daniel J. Sharp, 56, and Randy Lee Reeder, 50, remained in police custody Sunday, two days after they were arrested on four counts of murder each in the December beating deaths of Michael "Shan" Nolen Jr., 40; Michael Lawson, 56; Jason Coates, 29; and Brian G. Talboom, 51.

Sharp was due to be arraigned Monday in St. Joseph Superior Court in South Bend. Reeder, who was arrested in adjacent Berrien County, Mich., faced extradition proceedings.

When interviewed by homicide detectives, Sharp admitted to the killings. Sharp said that he and Reeder killed the four homeless men because they stole some scrap metal from them.
