(San Diego, CA) This report is interesting.
Agents of the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol seized four sport utility vehicles Thursday containing 4,000 pounds of marijuana with an estimated street value of $3 million, authorities reported yesterday. It's likely that 1,000 lbs. is approaching the maximum payload for the average SUV unless it has a beef-up suspension, therefore, it's logical to presume that each vehicle was full of marijuana.
One driver, a Mexican citizen, was arrested and turned over to Operation Alliance, a multiagency task force that enforces drug-trafficking laws.
Drivers of the three other vehicles escaped on foot, with two climbing over the border fence into Mexico near Tecate.
Somewhat surprisingly, the illegals had no problem with quickly abandoning their SUVs, plus $3 million in dope, when the Border Patrol showed up. With that much invested, I wonder why they didn't drive off in four directions and try to outrun the authorities. Instead, after one driver was pulled over, the other three stopped, jumped out and ran off.
