(Berlin, Germany) In preparation for the Group of Eight (G8) Summit Meeting next month, German police are compiling a database of human scents to track down possible violent protesters. A spokesman confirmed that the scents of anti-globalization activists have been collected for use by police sniffer dogs to identify troublemakers in the crowd.
Opponents voiced concerns that the stink method of identifying suspects was a trick used by the notorious Stasi secret police of the former East Germany.
The East German security police -- the omnipresent Stasi -- routinely collected scents from dissidents, often from bits of clothing sealed in airtight containers for storage, in order to track defectors or suspects later with the help of sniffer dogs.Interior Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble defended the practice as a reasonable measure to assure security during the June 6-8 gathering of heads of state.
"This leaves a very bad taste in my mouth," Social Democrat minister Zypries told HR3 radio.
Logically, one could conclude that the perpetrator of the elusive "perfect crime" will always smell guilty, despite the lack of any other evidence.
