(Paris) Conservatives win and socialists lose. The final result of the French presidential election has yet to be reported, but early counts indicate that conservative Nicolas Sarkozy beats socialist Segolene Royal 53% to 47%.
In central Paris, stone-throwing rioters supporting Royal had to be dispersed by tear gas as Royal conceded the election to Sarkozy.
"I gave it all my energy, and will continue," she told supporters. "Something has risen up that will not stop."A strong turnout of 85% of the voters is reported.
She expressed the hope that "the next president of the Republic" would accomplish his mission at the service of all the French people.
Having a conservative leading France is a step in the right direction, despite the fact that Sarkozy is a global warming scamee.
