(Toledo, Ohio) Some parents of seniors in the Toledo Public School system are upset that their children are barred from walking at commencement because they failed the Ohio Graduation Test (OGT). Despite parents' pleas to let their children participate, Board of Education President Steven Steel confirmed on Friday that they would be barred. Many students are affected.
Of the 295 Toledo Public seniors who took at least one OGT section in March, 147 failed . . . .Apparently, unless the requirements are changed, which is a possibility for the future, or a waiver is granted, the seniors who fail the OGT are out of luck.
Nevertheless, parents and students are protesting, presumably being under the impression that a diploma is deserved. Last Monday, 32 students gathered at the TPS Administration Building for a public display of their outrage.
I'd suggest that the outrage is misplaced. Parents should be outraged at their children for not learning enough to pass the test.
