(Laurens, South Carolina) In February 2006, a 36-year-old teacher, Wendie A. Schweikert, at E.B. Morse Elementary School was arrested for allegedly having sex with an 11-year-old student. Schweikert was charged with two counts of criminal sexual conduct with a minor.Yesterday in Laurens County Court, now 37-year-old Schweikert pleaded guilty before a judge to criminal sexual conduct with a minor and committing a lewd act on a minor in Laurens and Greenville counties. Schweikert was then sentenced to 10 years in prison. The former fifth-grade teacher was immediately escorted to jail. Upon her release, Schweikert will be required to register as a sex offender.
A plea deal had been offered to her which would have resulted in a 14-year prison term, but Schweikert rejected it and put her future in the hands of a judge.
Notably, the underlying race issue in the Schweikert case continues to simmer.
