First, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers called the Mosul Dam on the Tigris River the "most dangerous dam in the world" because it was built in an area of sinkholes and it also is subjected to significant erosion problems.
Consequently, Baghdad was warned that the probability of catastrophic failure is "exceptionally high."
Second, Iraqi government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh said the reports of failure are inaccurate and untrue.
"The Mosul Dam is in good condition and it is not in danger," he said in a statement. "This dam is under constant observation by the Iraqi government and all precautionary measures and needed maintenance are being taken."Third, we wait.
He said teams of specialists and experts were "working around the clock" to strengthen the dam by bolstering areas suffering from erosion with cement.
[Technical details on the dam's condition are here.]
