On a different note, Joanna Plants' case is a sad story and some have mentioned that she deserves a second chance. I gather that it's believed Plants received too harsh a sentence. By all means, readers, weigh in on Comments. (h/t Saul in Comments)

Nevada Woman Gets Life for Killing Stepmom
[Previous 12/6/07 post]
(Fallon, Nevada) In March 2007, 17-year-old Joanna Marie Plants, shot and killed her stepmother, Ginger Plants, 42, allegedly because of a dispute regarding the family's pets. The teen admitted to shooting Ginger Plants in the head with a .380-caliber Taurus semi-automatic pistol. Strangely, Plants claimed that she was mad at her father so she shot her stepmom.

Plants was originally charged with open murder with the use of a firearm, first degree felony murder with the use of a firearm and being a user of controlled substances in possession of a firearm.

The criminal complaint indicated that Joanna Plants was a methamphetamine user at the time of the shooting. Also, according to court records, Joanna Plants testified during a 2005 trial in which she stated that she has used meth since the age of 11.

In August, Joanna Plants pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in accordance with an agreement with the prosecution. In return, Plants gets life in prison with a chance for parole after 20 years. All the while, Plants has been in custody at the Churchill County Jail, unable to make bail of one million dollars.

In November, Joanna Plants was accused of attacking a fellow inmate at the Churchill County jail, beating her. Charges are pending but inconsequential given her other problems.

This week, 18-year-old Joanna Plants was sentenced to life in prison.
Eighteen-year-old Joanna Marie Plants cried on and off during testimony Tuesday before the sentence was imposed by District Judge David Huff. [ ... ]

During her sentencing hearing, Plants apologized and said she cared about her stepmother.
Father Timothy Plants has forgiven his daughter.
"There is nothing we can do to bring Ginger back. I am a victim of the crime in more ways than one," Joanna's father said. "She's got a great heart. She needs help," he said.

Sherman Nance, Joanna's mother, said she thinks her daughter would be a wonderful rehabilitation candidate, mentioning she is very unselfish and caring. "She is awesome with young kids," she said.

Chad Plants, a brother of Joanna, said he loves his sister very much, and believes she has potential.

Under questioning from District Attorney Mallory, he conceded his sister had asked him where she could get a gun to kill their father on the day she killed her stepmother.

"She is a very loving person. She always wanted us to know that she loved us," Chad Plants said.
So, Joanna Plants is a loving, very unselfish and caring person with a great heart who asked for a gun to kill her father but killed her stepmother instead. What part of loving, very unselfish, caring and great heart includes shooting someone in the head? Excuse me for not understanding the logic.

By the way, I believe an unindicted co-conspirator is the drug methamphetamine.

I think anyone under the age of 25 should be given another chance. When some one uses drugs, and is in an unsupportive environment they make wrong choices, negative choices. every one in that kind of drug circle. is violent, and dark and dangerous, now give them an adolesent. they will use the naive person to the best of there ability. . It is not just her fault but he environment. She was begging for help. and living only for the moment.

... so, anyone over the age of 25 does not deserve a 2nd chance then??? I have corresponded with Joanna and she truly deserves a 2nd chance, as the most important aspects of her circumstances are not conveyed in the above article. The "2nd chance" argument is true, but the entire adjudication process "raped" Joanna, which if proper procedures and ethics had been upheld, her 2nd chance would not be in doubt.

I believe if you do the crime, you need to do the time. After all an innocent human being is dead.
