NC Woman Gets Jail for Rape - Updated

(Waynesville, North Carolina) It appears that the reporting on the Spann case has one inconsistency. Contrary to a report from WYFF.com which stated that Spann was sentenced to nine months in jail, the Asheville Daily Planet indicates otherwise.
After pleading guilty to having sex with a 13-year-old boy, Stephanie Rae Mathis Spann of Sylva was sentenced on April 28 to a maximum of eight years in state prison.
There is a considerable difference between nine months and eight years. Apologies to the readers for the inaccuracy.

In any event, since the reporting has been sketchy, it's still not exactly clear what sentence was imposed on Stephanie Rae Mathis Spann. (h/t KYP in Comments)

NC Woman Gets Jail for Rape
[Previous 5/1/08 post]
(Haywood County, North Carolina) A 31-year-old woman, Stephanie Rae Mathis Spann, was sentenced Monday in Haywood County Superior Court after pleading guilty to felony rape of a boy under 16.

For the rape, Spann was given nine months in jail. Reportedly, she'll have to serve at least six.
In January 2007, Spann, who was a family friend of the victim, was drinking and taking methamphetamine and had sex with an adult relative of the victim. She then raped the boy, who was under 16 at the time.

The boy's mother confronted Spann when she learned of the rape, and Spann admitted what she had done.
Methamphetamine, eh?

Nine months in jail makes rape out to be a relatively minor offense. Maybe it's just that the planets were aligned properly for Stephanie Spann.
