Madrid Bombing Suspects Set Free

(Madrid, Spain) The Spanish Supreme Court overturned the convictions of three men in the Madrid Train Bombing case and affirmed the acquittal of a fourth.

Abdelilah El Fadual El Akil, Basel Ghalyoun and Mohamed Almallah Dabas had been convicted and sentenced to nine to 12 years in prison for collaborating with terrorists and belonging to a terrorist organization.

The appeals of the verdicts were successful, presumably because the Supreme Court believed evidence didn't support their convictions. They were released from prison yesterday afternoon.

The Supreme Court affirmed the acquittal of the fourth man, Rabei Osman El Sayed, known as "The Egyptian." He is suspected of being an architect of the bombings.

The court contended that the prosecution had not proven its case against Rabei Osman El Sayed, who is currently serving a sentence in Italy after a 2006 conviction on terrorism charges.

The end result of the Madrid Train Bombing trials is 18 convictions, down from a previous 21. The Supreme Court was also able to dismiss suspicions that the ETA separatist group was involved in the Madrid terror bombings. Barring the filing of new charges or appeals, the prosecution of the bombers is reportedly complete.
