(Miami, Florida) A 14-year-old South Carolina girl, D'Zhana Simmons, thanks her lucky stars and her doctors. Through the wonders of modern medicine, the teen was able to hold on for over 100 days without a heart.
A pair of artificial pumping devices coupled with handcrafted substitute heart chambers kept her heartless body alive while she waited for a transplant.
Simmons says she felt like a "fake person" for 118 days when she had no heart beating in her chest.Yesterday, Simmons was released from Holtz Children's Hospital in Miami. Tears flowed as she thanked her surgeons.
"But I know that I really was here," the 14-year-old said, "and I did live without a heart."
