Rhode Island Rats Abandoned

(Foster, Rhode Island) A 23-year-old Providence man, Toby Duffany, was arrested for abandoning more than 250 rats on the side of the Hemlock Road in Foster this week.

Seventy-two of the rats could not be resuscitated. The surviving rats were rescued by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) for euthanization.

One source reports that Duffany's girlfriend recently gave birth and the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) told Duffany that he couldn't take his newborn home until the rats were gone. It's unknown how the government knew Duffany was keeping hundreds of rats in his home.

Currently, it's theorized that the rats were being raised as pet food or perhaps Mr. Duffany is an aficionado of Asian rat magic.

Duffany was arraigned on a charge of rat abandonment and released on $20,000 personal recognizance. A district court appearance is scheduled for January 21st.
