Alleged Iranian Arms Ship Bound for Gaza

Back in January, a ship loaded with arms and explosives bound for Gaza was intercepted and redirected to Cyprus where the Cypriot-flagged Monchegorsk is still moored. Iran was identified as the state of origin and Syria, the state of destination.

This week, a United Nations sanctions committee gave Iran and Syria ultimatums to provide explanations of their involvement with the ship by next week. The ship is apparently in "gross violation" of existing UN resolutions banning Iranian arms exports.

Based upon their history, chances are that Iran and Syria will deny any culpability despite their level of involvement. However,
Both French ambassador Jean-Maurice Ripert and US envoy Susan Rice invited Iran to use the opportunity to engage in diplomatic negotiations on its nuclear and other arms programs.

"The United States will not waver in its determination to ensure that Iran does not obtain nuclear weapons but the United States also sees an opportunity - a chance for the Iranian government to demonstrate that it is willing to unclench its fist and begin a serious, responsible discussion about a range of issues," Rice said in her formal remarks.
So, there you have it. Both the UN and the U.S. are wishy-washy in their solicitations involving Iran and Syria. The only things missing are lines of pretty pleases, hugs and kisses.

Of course, since a UN resolution has possibly been violated, the incident may well sit on the back burner only to be given prominence sometime in the future as justification for action. On the other hand, the whole issue may just fade away due to inaction.
