(Richmond, Virginia) The local boss of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), Robin Starr, apparently killed her dog, Louie, by leaving the poor pooch in a hot car for four hours.
Surely an embarrassment, however, Starr's supporters immediately put some spin on the death.
Anne Grier, chairwoman of the Richmond SPCA board of directors, said she believes the dog's death will boost Starr's position as an animal advocate. Then Starr's husband, Ed, said he put the dog in the car and didn't tell his wife about it so it's his fault. Nonetheless and despite the spin and the excuses, some in the public think there should be consequences, suggesting that Starr step down since she's lost credibility.
"I think it enhances her ability to communicate and educate the public about humane issues."
Incidentally, I'm really flummoxed by Grier's logic. She contends that Starr's ability to communicate and educate are enhanced by killing a dog. Am I to believe that Starr would achieve superior enhancement if she killed more dogs?
To be fair, from the description of Louie it sounds like he was on his last legs anyhow. Louie was 16 years old, deaf and blind. Chances are that Louie would have been denied any care under a progressive veterinary health system.
