(London, England) Over the last few weeks, a minor scandal has emerged regarding Britain attempting to export toxic waste marked as recyclable plastic to Brazil. The cargo ship MSC Serena arrived in Brazil and was found to contain 1,400 tons of clinical and domestic waste including batteries, used syringes, condoms and dirty diapers.
The Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Resources found the dangerous waste and ordered it to be returned to England. Under British law, it's illegal to export garbage.
The British Environment Agency Crime Unit is investigating and thus far three men have been arrested. The men have been released on bail pending an October court appearance.
If successfully prosecuted, they could face up to two years in prison and be given an unlimited fine.Yep, one thousand four hundred tons just slipped through the checking process.
Those in charge of Worldwide Biorecyclables, the company at the centre of the Environment Agency investigation, have said that they were so overwhelmed with work that they failed to check the containers.
