Canadian Blogger Murdered in Mexico
(Isla Mujeres, Mexico) On this small island off the coast of Cancun, 60-year-old Renée Wathelet lived and worked, detailing her experiences on several websites. The former financial advisor from Montreal had abandoned a successful career to enjoy life in the sun.
On September 7, Wathelet wrote in her blog, Live From the Islands, of walking on the beach and meeting a humorous and kind fisherman named Jose.
On Thursday of this week, Wathelet was found dead with more than 30 stab wounds to her chest and neck and 24-year-old Jose Joaquin Palacios Garaza was apprehended by Mexican police a short distance away. Garaza was covered in blood and carrying a knife.
Friends say that the Jose Wathelet wrote about may not be the same Jose who allegedly killed her.
Nevertheless, it's a sad story and no motive has been disclosed. It is noteworthy, though, that 30-plus stab wounds would appear to indicate something other than a random attack. Passion, of some nature, was involved.
