(Topeka, Kansas) In November 2008, a paraprofessional and substitute teacher at Robinson Middle School, Jennifer Dawn Liskey (aka Jennifer Savage), was accused of engaging in a years-long sexual relationship with a male student starting when the boy was 13 years old.
Liskey was booked into custody on charges of unlawful sex, criminal sodomy of a child and aggravated indecent liberties with a child. In January 2009, Liskey pleaded no contest to aggravated indecent liberties and criminal sodomy.
Yesterday in Shawnee County District Court, Judge Jan Leuenberger sentenced 39-year-old Liskey to probation after suspending three prison terms of 30 months each. The judge claimed that the boy was partially responsible and Liskey had an emotional disorder making it hard for her to resist him.
The judge also said there wasn't any evidence to show the victim had suffered in the relationship. The youth is "dealing with the situation fine," the judge wrote, and concerns by his parents that he might "crash" in the next four to six years are "speculative."Voicing deep concern regarding the sentence of probation, District Attorney Chad Taylor immediately appealed the case. The boy's parents expressed anger, asserting it was a case of blaming the victim.
