Kansas Teacher Guilty in Sex Case - Updated
[Previous 8/14/10 post]
(Leavenworth, Kansas) Former Pleasant Ridge High School teacher Shannon Young pleaded guilty yesterday in Leavenworth County District Court to three counts of unlawful sexual relations.
Young taught language arts at Pleasant Ridge High School during the 2009-2010 school year. She also was a volleyball coach.According to the agreement between the prosecution and the defense, Young will likely be sentenced to probation.
According to County Attorney Todd Thompson, Young and the student had sexual relations in her vehicle, at her residence and at Pleasant Ridge High School.
Thompson said Young purchased a newer model Mustang convertible, which the boy began driving to and from school. Young and the boy also opened a joint checking account.
Fortunately, Young avoided more serious punishment under a new law which makes unlawful sex a more serious crime. Her crimes were committed before the law was enacted. Since she had sex with a student at school, I believe time behind bars is warranted.
Sentencing has been scheduled for September 8 by District Judge Gunnar Sundby.

The alleged sex reportedly occurred between August 2009 and June 2010. Although the boy was of legal age to give consent, it's still illegal for a teacher in Kansas to mix it up with a student at her school.
Young has been charged with three counts of unlawful sexual relations. A court appearance is scheduled for today.
