(Chihuahua, Mexico) A female police chief in the town of Meoqui, Hermila Garcia, was gunned down by drug cartel assassins this week as she drove herself to work.
Garcia had been on the job for a mere two months. She was 38.
One of a small number of women who have had the bravery to take on the drug cartels, she was gunned down at 7.20am on Monday.Ms. Garcia's murder is considered a warning to the 20-year-old female police chief of Praxedis, Marisol Valles Garcia.
She was attacked as she drove to work by herself.
Garcia, a lawyer by profession and single with no children, was one of a handful of women who have taken leadership roles in police departments in towns where men have stayed away because of fear.
Rest in peace, Ms. Garcia. Mexico needs more brave people like you.
