(Reynosa, Mexico) One of the top leaders of the Gulf Cartel, Gilberto Barragan Balderas, 41, was arrested last Friday at a ranch near Reynosa during his birthday party. Two associates were arrested with Barragan Balderas and weapons were confiscated.
Barragan Balderas is wanted by the Drug Enforcement Agency and has a $5 million bounty bounty on his head.
A DEA statement says he was "responsible for obtaining advanced notice regarding the movement and locations of military and state police patrols and mobile checkpoints, thus protecting shipments of cocaine and marijuana for the Gulf Cartel and Los Zetas" before the two gangs split in 2010.
