(Caserio La Bomba, Guatemala) Drug cartel members in several vehicles reportedly attacked a remote jungle ranch and killed 27 people. Twenty-five of the victims were beheaded.
As spotter planes flew overhead, Guatemalan soldiers raced along jungle tracks to cut off a nearby border crossing into Mexico to prevent the assailants from fleeing, Col. Rony Urizar said.Additionally, according to a later report, 29 people were killed, including two children. Police said the victims were bound and displayed evidence of torture.
News reports in Guatemala said the Los Cocos ranch in a lawless part of the Peten region belonged to the brother of one of the nation's most widely known drug bosses.
The assailants, moving in several vehicles, entered the ranch sometime late Saturday, and concluded the slaughter early Sunday, Urizar said.[…]
The brutality of the killings and beheadings is a trademark of Los Zetas, which is engaged in a turf war in northeast Mexico with the Gulf Cartel. Even as Los Zetas have appeared on the ropes in Tamaulipas state in Mexico, they have moved strongly into Guatemala and Honduras, diplomats and law enforcement officials say.
Frankly, I believe the media should do a better job of emphasizing the killing campaigns of the drug cartels. It's mass murder. With 25 people having their heads chopped off in one of many incidents, international outrage should be incendiary. It's not.
Thus far, the massacre has been reported by the media with all the importance of a bus crash or nasty convenience store holdup. No, check that. If it were a bus crash or nasty convenience store holdup, there would be pictures. None have surfaced.
