Stopped at the Border

(Bangor, Maine) Two Canadian females, Michelle Marie Bahrynowski and Carrie Anne Sadler, used Facebook to call out to U.S. friends to tell Border and Customs authorities that the pair were crossing the border to visit them. A Customs and Border Protection search of Bahrynowski's cellphone revealed the ploy.

Meanwhile, authorities received faxed messages from New York and Massachusetts indicating "Yes, they're visiting me."

Note that Bahrynowski and Sadler had previously been stopped at the border trying to enter the U.S. without proper visas while traveling in a vehicle packed with undeclared CDs, T-shirts, tote bags and other merchandise. Consequently, they were arrested during their second attempt.

If convicted, they face up to six months in federal prison and a possible fine of $5,000.

Frankly, my head is aching. Two Canadian women face possible prison for trying, let me emphasize trying to enter the U.S. while concurrently a flood of Mexicans is regularly crossing -- that's actual crossing, not trying -- the southern border of the U.S. and, if they're caught, they are often released. Southern border crossers at most face deportation. Doesn't make sense.
