(Clearwater, Kansas) Yesterday, 40-year-old former Clearwater Middle School teacher Cathleen Balman was sentenced to probation for sexually abusing a 15-year-old student.
District Judge Terry Pullman decided Balman was a good candidate for probation and a treatment program.
After granting her probation, Pullman said told Balman that if she does re-offend, he will revoke her probation and order her to serve a 34-month prison sentence that will run consecutively to any new sentence she may receive.Balman was ordered to have no contact with non-relatives under the age of 18 and to register as a sex offender.
“I hope that this is a one-time occurrence,” he said.

(Clearwater, Kansas) Former language arts teacher at Clearwater Middle School, Cathleen Balman, has pleaded guilty to engaging in a year-long indecent relationship with a 15-year-old boy.
Balman pleaded guilty on Tuesday to one count of indecent liberties with a child.Sentencing has been scheduled for April 19.
Her trial on three counts of indecent liberties with a child was scheduled to start Wednesday.
Two of the charges were dismissed as part of the plea bargain.

(Clearwater, Kansas) A 42-year-old teacher at Clearwater Middle School, Cathleen Balman, has been accused of engaging in a year-long indecent relationship with a 15-year-old male student.
Balman faces three counts of indecent liberties with a child.
Lt. Jeff Weible with the Exploited and Missing Child Unit said they began investigating Balman in September.Balman was booked and released on $250,000 bond.
Investigators found text messages and pictures exchanged between a 15 year-old boy and his former teacher.
"As we gathered more information through our investigation we began to see that there was a realtionship as well," Weible said. The relationship lasted "at least a year" he said.
