(New Smyrna Beach, Florida) A 19-year-old local man, Edwin Allen Wren, was arrested last Thursday for allegedly sexually assaulting a 9-month-old baby.
Wren faces charges of sexual battery on a person under 12 and aggravated child abuse.
"You want to get this person off the street. You almost take it personally," Sheriff Ben Johnson said.Wren is in custody at the Volusia County Jail.
"But you have to make sure you do everything correct. You don't want to lose a case on down the road because you acted in haste. But it's something you work hard, you want to take and do everything you can for the family. The family is a victim too, for the child. Whatever it takes. So it's something that we work very, very hard. And it's something we train our people in."
Deputies said when the crime occurred Wren was babysitting. Apparently, he was staying with the child’s parents. Wren remains in jail without bond. He is also in protective custody.
