Paramedic Accused of Raping Patient

(Hamden, Connecticut) A 59-year-old paramedic, Mark Powell, has been accused of raping a female patient in the back of an ambulance on the way to the hospital on December 25.

Powell was arrested this week on charges of first-degree sexual assault and first-degree unlawful restraint.

The victim is a 22-year-old woman who fell, hit her head and went unconscious during a holiday party, police said. An ambulance from American Medical Response was taking her to Yale-New Haven Hospital when she woke up and found the paramedic sexually assaulting her, she told police.

She said that couldn't move because she was strapped to a stretcher, police said.

The woman called Hamden police to report the rape after she had been discharged from the hospital, police said.

Powell was booked into custody and released on $25,000 bail. Arraignment is scheduled for January 19.
