Episode Honolulu 1972
Living in Honolulu in an apartment with many other sometimes USNavy guys kicking in for rent was not unusual. In the 2500 block of Laau Street, there were at least a dozen other submarine sailors chipping in to allow them to stay whenever they were in port or on off-crew.
Any rational person would forego living on a submarine when spending time blocks from Waikiki Beach was an option. The place was pretty popular. It was a great time.
Lots of sailors visited and stayed over during my time in Hawaii and, since I was home-ported at Pearl Harbor and mostly in port, I took care of the books on rent, telephone etc. So, I have a complaint.
Dave G., I don't remember which submarine he was attached to, owes me $40 in 1972 terms. I do remember his last name. He stayed at the apartment for awhile and was experiencing girlfriend/wife problems and understood that I couldn't afford telephone bills. Dave G. looked me into the eye and said, "Mike, you need to trust me."
I have never been paid for the long-distance phone call, which as I recall was a big chunk of my paycheck.
Dave G., you owe me.
