Iowa Teacher Gets No Jail for Sexual Exploitation - Update

(Cedar Rapids, Iowa) Prior to the scheduled start of her trial, 42-year-old former chemistry teacher at Washington High School, Heather Adams, pleaded guilty to one count of sexual exploitation by a school employee.
Assistant Linn County Attorney Lisa Epps said Adams requested a deferred judgment and the judge granted it. Adams was given two years probation and will be listed on the state's sex offender registry for 10 years.[…]

Adams resigned from her teaching position for "personal reasons" after her arrest. She had taught chemistry at Washington High for 18 years.

Adams' teaching license is valid until 2020, according to the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners website.
The Board of Educational Examiners will convene to determine whether Adams keeps her teaching license.

Iowa Teacher Accused of Sexual Exploitation
[Previous 5/11/12 post]
(Cedar Rapids, Iowa) A 41-year-old chemistry teacher at Washington High School, Heather Adams, has been accused of sexual exploitation by a school employee.

Adams was arrested yesterday evening.
Cedar Rapids police spokesperson, Sergeant Cristy Hamblin, confirmed the arrest Thursday night and gave some details of the incident.

“We were notified on Sunday May 6th at 9:30 in the evening there was a suspicious vehicle over in the 300 block of 28th Street Drive Southeast,” Sgt. Hamblin said.

Hamblin said officers arrived to find Adams and an 18-year-old male in the car.

“Through the investigation, they found she is a teacher at Washington High School,” said Sgt. Hamblin, “and again, through investigation, discovered they were having sex in the vehicle.”

Police say normally this would be considered a legal sex act, because the male student is 18-years-old. However, Adams’ status as a high school teacher makes it a sex crime.
Details on booking are unavailable.
