(South Charleston, West Virginia)
Diners are making a political statement amid the waffle fries and chicken sandwiches across America and in West Virginia.Although this story profiles one franchise, reports are emerging from around the country about lines of customers at Chick-fil-A restaurants. Illogically, the mainstream media are not, as yet, covering the story.
Lines at the South Charleston Chick-fil-A in Kanawha County stretched from the counter deep into the parking lot and the drive-thru was backed up all the way to U.S. Route 119 on Wednesday.
"It started at 6:30 a.m. when we opened for breakfast," said Manager-Owner Tom Minturn. "I expected a good reaction and community support just because of what we've done in the community. I did not expect this great of support. It's been phenomenal."
Ever since Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy expressed his personal belief marriage should be between a man and a woman, his restaurant empire has become the flashpoint of the fierce debate in America over same-sex marriage intermingled with arguments over free speech.
Cathy's remarks were personal and had no connection to the company's business plan.
Partial credit for the flood of customers at Chick-fil-A is directed to Tea Party supporters, who can appear out of the ether when political pressure groups attack American values.
