Village Voice Editors Quit

(New York City) The top two editors of the weekly Village Voice have hit the road, willingly. Editor Will Bourne and deputy editor Jessica Lustig balked at a management ultimatum to reduce staff and, instead, quit and skedaddled.

Competition from the Web is cited as at least partly to blame for the newspaper's decrease in operating revenue, requiring persistent belt-tightening.

It's too early for general agreement on the specific earned legacy of Bourne and Lustig. I suggest they will be seen as smart to leave when they did.

My overall take is that simple, unavoidable business pressures from the Web prompted them to leave a sinking Manhattan print-media stalwart. From a professional survival standpoint, it's best to avoid being around when the finger-pointing starts.
