Namibian Mom Kills and BBQs Daughter

(Ongwediva, Namibia) A local teacher has shocked the community by allegedly killing her 26-year-old handicapped daughter and burning her body in the backyard barbecue.

Police confirmed the alleged murder yesterday during their weekend press briefing in Windhoek.

The deceased, identified as Magdalena Nunyango Amunyoko, was reportedly born with a rare condition that restricted her body functions, left her bedridden and with blurred speech.

According to witnesses and neighbours, Amunyoko is suspected to have been hacked to death with a panga [large, broad-bladed African knife] before her body was burnt on a braai [barbecue] stand behind the house.

Amunyoko’s wheelchair, household appliances, newspapers, a fan, dishes, cups, DSTV satellite dish, clothes and a panga were also burned together with her body.

The suspect, a teacher at Shapwa Combined School at Ongwediva, is a single mother of two boys and the late Amunyoko.

The gruesome murder is believed to have occurred at around 18h00 on Friday and the body was discovered at about 10h00 on Saturday by one of the sons, who then called the police, leading to the mother’s arrest.

When The Namibian arrived at the house where Amunyoko was allegedly killed, the remains of her charred body with most parts almost reduced to ashes, was still resting on top of the braai stand. The only part that survived the fire was her head which could be seen in the fire.

The mother is receiving psychiatric treatment.
