US Marine Hassoun Sentenced for Desertion
Cpl. Wassef Hassoun has been sentenced to more than two years in the brig.
Hassoun, 35, was sentenced to 735 days of confinement in the brig, a dishonorable discharge from the Marine Corps, forfeiture of all pay and reduction to the rank of E-1 or private by Maj. Nicholas Martz.Hassoun served as an Arabic translator in the Marine Corps.
Hassoun was found guilty of desertion with the intent to avoid hazardous duty from June 19 to July 8, 2004, while on duty at Camp Fallujah, Iraq, and desertion with the intent to remain away permanently when he fled to Lebanon in January 2005.
